The Black Orchid Story
As I was developing my new venture, I had many “goose bump” moments along the way. On a whim I bought an orchid plant and found that as I drank my morning coffee and observed the beauty of this orchid, my mind was flooded with memories and thoughts of my mother, Norma Hurley. I surprisingly found myself remembering the days as a very young child and Mother owned “Norma’s Flower & Gift Shop”. I would accompany her to an orchid greenhouse in Sikeston, MO and run through the rows of orchids helping her choose the ones she purchased for the shop.
One day I had my laptop open searching for inspiration for a name to call my new salon & spa. Frustrated, I gazed at the orchid plant, and I found myself trying out The Orchid Salon & Spa. Orchid means “beautiful” and I semi-committed to the name, but something was holding me back from a full commitment. In December when I found the real estate that seemed perfect for the business, it was teasingly suggested that I call my business The Black Orchid Salon & Spa, inspired by the black & white awnings that adorned the windows. Just for fun, I Googled “black orchid” only to find that there is a black orchid hybrid and it also is a symbol for therapy and relaxation. There came another “goose bump moment”.
Numerous things have happened over the months and at times the Black Orchid venture seemed overwhelming. Amazingly, whatever obstacle I was facing at the time, a solution was presented. There is no doubt in my mind and in my heart, that Mother has her loving hand on the Black Orchid Salon & Spa and wants her baby girl to be successful in offering a place that guests will feel a warm welcome and service beyond expectation. So in her loving memory and dedicated to the most beautiful of women and the best friend I ever had, The Black Orchid Salon & Spa begins its journey.
